Exposed: How Untrained Influencers Steal Your Best Clients

I want to tell you about a client who came into my chair a few months ago with a scalp that was red, inflamed, and painful to the touch.

When I asked her what happened, she said, “Well, I read online that peppermint oil is great for hair growth, so I’ve been using it every day.”

I said, “Okay, but did you dilute it?”

She looked at me, confused. “Dilute it?”

She had been applying 100% pure peppermint essential oil directly to her scalp. For weeks.

No carrier oil. No training. No guidance. Just something she read on the internet from a wellness influencer who’s never touched a client’s hair in their life.

And here’s the thing: She’s not alone.

A hairstylist parts a client’s hair to check mild scalp irritation after a peppermint oil mistake.
Even natural oils can cause irritation when used without guidance.

Clients Are Looking for Natural—With or Without You

If you’ve been behind the chair for any amount of time, you’ve noticed the shift.

Clients are asking questions they never used to ask:

  • “What’s in this product?”
  • “Do you have anything without sulfates or parabens?”
  • “Can you recommend a natural oil for my scalp?”
  • “I’ve been losing hair—what can I use that’s chemical-free?”

They’re coming in with thinning hair, chemical burns from box dyes, and scalps that are dry, flaky, and damaged. They’re tired of the harsh stuff. They’re tired of the side effects. They want natural. They want holistic. They want solutions that actually heal instead of just covering up the problem.

And when they don’t get answers from their stylist? They go to Google. They go to TikTok. They go to wellness influencers who have zero training in hair or scalp care but sound confident enough to be trusted.

That’s how my client ended up burning her scalp with undiluted peppermint oil.

The Problem: Clients Are DIY-ing Without Training

A cluttered counter covered with essential oils, droppers, and bottles showing DIY confusion.
DIY blends may seem natural, but they can damage the scalp without proper training.

Here’s what I’m seeing every single week:

Clients are blending their own oil mixtures at home. They’re buying essential oils from the nearest store without understanding dilution ratios, carrier oils, or contraindications. They’re following advice from people who’ve never studied trichology, never been licensed, and have no idea what they’re doing.

And it’s causing damage.

But here’s what breaks my heart: They’re not doing this because they don’t trust YOU. They’re doing it because they don’t think you know how to help them.

When a client asks, “Do you have anything natural for my dry scalp?” and you say, “Not really, but I can recommend this product from the shelf”—you just lost credibility.

When a client says, “I’m losing hair and I want to try something holistic,” and you don’t have an answer—you just lost revenue.

Because she’s going to find someone who DOES have the answer. And that someone might not be a cosmetologist.

The Shift That’s Coming (Whether You’re Ready or Not)

Let me be real with you about where this industry is headed:

If hairstylists don’t step into the holistic hair care space, someone else will.

And they already are.

Wellness influencers are building audiences in the millions teaching people how to “heal their scalp naturally.” Naturopaths are opening practices that focus on hair health from the inside out. Herbalists are creating product lines for scalp conditions.

And none of them are licensed cosmetologists.

But clients don’t care about licenses when they’re desperate for solutions. They care about results.

So here’s what’s going to happen if you don’t adapt:

1. You’ll lose your position as the trusted advisor. Clients will come to you for cuts and styling, but they’ll go to someone else for the “healing” part. You’ll be reduced to “just the person who does my hair”—not the expert they trust with their scalp health.

2. Clients will come in less often. When clients are on a holistic hair regimen with someone else, they’re not coming to you every week or every two weeks. They’re coming every 6-8 weeks for a trim. That’s a massive revenue loss.

3. Traditional salons will struggle while holistic practitioners thrive. The stylists who learn holistic hair care NOW will be booked solid at premium prices. The ones who stay stuck in the old model will be competing on price and availability—and losing.

4. You’ll miss the biggest income opportunity of your career. Holistic consultations, custom scalp treatments, and natural product lines can add thousands of dollars per month to your income. But only if you know what you’re doing.

The Opportunity: Become the Expert Clients Are Searching For

Here’s the good news: You’re already in the perfect position.

You see your clients’ scalps more than anyone else—more than their doctors, more than wellness influencers, more than naturopaths.

You’re already touching their hair, observing their scalp, and hearing about their health struggles.

The only thing standing between you and becoming the holistic hair expert in your area is training.

When you understand:

  • How to safely use essential oils and carrier oils
  • How to create custom scalp treatments based on health conditions
  • How to formulate natural products that actually work
  • How to have confident consultations about hair loss, scalp health, and holistic solutions

…you become irreplaceable.

You become the stylist clients search for. The one they wait for. The one they pay premium prices for because they can’t get what you offer anywhere else.

What This Means for Your Business

Let me paint you a picture of what happens when you add holistic hair care to your skill set:

✅ Clients come to you FIRST when they have scalp or hair loss concerns—not Google, not influencers
✅ You can charge $150-$300+ for holistic consultations and custom treatments
✅ Clients come in MORE often because they’re getting ongoing care, not just styling
✅ You create additional income streams through product sales and specialty services
✅ You stand out from every other stylist in your area
✅ You build a waitlist because your expertise is in demand

This isn’t a trend. This is the future of cosmetology.

The question is: Are you going to lead it, or watch someone else take your clients?

Stylists who embrace holistic care lead the new era of cosmetology.

The Time to Act Is Now

The clients are already asking for this. The demand is already there. The only question is whether YOU’RE going to be the one to meet it.

That’s exactly why I created the Holistic Hairstylist Accelerator Certification.

I teach licensed hair care professionals like you how to:

  • Decode the root causes of hair loss and scalp issues
  • Master the healing power of oils (safely and effectively)
  • Formulate natural products your clients will love
  • Conduct expert consultations with confidence
  • Market and monetize your new holistic skill set

Because I don’t want to see wellness influencers take over what should be YOUR expertise.

I don’t want to see you lose clients—or revenue—because you didn’t adapt.

And I definitely don’t want you stuck doing the same thing as everyone else while other stylists are thriving in this space.

The future of cosmetology is holistic. The future is natural. The future is YOU—if you step into it.
